Chapter Seven

“So you’re living with Matt now?” Susan’s voice, over the phone, sounded incredulous. “Gee whiz, I go away for a week and look what happens.”

Jen leaned back against the plushy down pillows on the guest bed. “It’s unbelievable, isn’t it? All he did was ask me to help him brainstorm for the day care at work, and he ended up with a pregnant woman in his guest room. That’ll teach him not to be such a nice guy to needy women.”

Susan laughed. “Oh, he’s no pushover. I work with the guy, and believe you me, there are plenty of women who would do just about anything to get where you are but they couldn’t get past square one.”

Out of habit, Jen was about to ask for details, but she stopped. Suddenly, she wasn’t sure she wanted to know.

“Of course, the difference is that you’re not romantically threatening,” Susan went on.

An objection lodged in Jen’s throat, but she swallowed it. “No, I guess I’m not.”

“Whoa! You guess not? Jen, what are you saying?”

“Nothing,” Jen said quickly. “I meant of course I’m not romantically threatening. To anyone.” She sighed. “I’ve loved being pregnant, but I can’t wait for little Jason to come on out and play so I can stop feeling like a overblown beach ball.”

Susan laughed. “I know, isn’t it the worst? What about getting out of bed in the middle of the night to pee? Sometimes I had to get Hank to give me a push.”

Jen absently bounced the coiled phone wire with her finger. “That’s when a husband comes in really handy.”

“True, but there’s something to be said for being able to stretch out alone in the bed, too.” There was a pause as Susan spoke to one of the kids. When she came back on the line she asked, “So tell me, what’s Matt’s place like?”

“Fabulous. You know those old Fred Astaire movies where they have these big Art Deco apartments with two floors and the kind of staircase you can pose on? It’s like that. And he has a housekeeper named Moll who has been positively doting on me. She cooks, she brings it in on a tray, she cleans it all up. I felt really guilty for the first couple of days, but she seems to take such genuine pleasure in it that I’m trying to convince myself that it’s okay.”

“So how long have you been there?”

“Four days.” Jen looked around the room with as much wonder as she’d felt the first time she saw it. The ceilings were high, with carved crown moldings that gave her the feeling she was staying in a luxury hotel. The decorating, which had probably been done a few decades ago, was exquisite. “Already I can tell it’s going to be hard to leave.”

“How long are you staying?”

Jen shrugged down under the thick comforter. She could see that outside a light snow had begun to fall. “Matt keeps insisting that I stay until the baby’s born, but I don’t know.
